Responsible Celebrity Endorsement

India may emulate the Chinese model of banning celebrities from en¬dorsing any advertisement for a period of time once its established that they appeared in any misleading advertise¬ments. The Consumer Affairs Ministry has zeroed down on this option after going through the global best practices to deal with commercials which fail to live up to their claims.
An inter-ministerial committee head¬ed by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had asked the Consumer Affairs Ministry to look into other options rather than the proposed provision of sending celebrities to jail for endorsing such advertisements in the Consumer Protection Bill that has been introduced in Parliament.
It was during the assessment that the Chinese law is best suited for Indian conditions and it will be placed before the ministerial panel for a decision. "Barring celebrities from endorsing any advertisement even for a couple of years will pinch them more than the imprison¬ment provision.
While the Chinese law prohib and misleading advertising cont says celebrities or other endorsers I their name to a product or servi be held liable if they know, or o know that the advertisement amo false advertising.
The proposed provisions Consumer Protection Bill, which is review of the ministerial committee, celebrities liable for a jail sentenc to five years and a fine of up to Rs for misleading endorsements.
